ALTAR SERVING AT SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

Altar Servers are a silent witness to the mysteries of the Altar.
While the actions in the sanctuary can all be done by the priest alone, the Altar Server is doing something more than is just useful.
Their action in the liturgy draws people deeper into the mystical realities of the Sacrifice of Jesus.
Their purposeful activity helps people to enter into the a reverent frame of mind for Worship.

It all begins with the procession - the ancient act of leading people to the place where God comes to meet us.  Carrying candles bears witness to the light of Christ received at Baptism - light shining in the darkness.  Dressed in white, Altar Servers help us to remember the angels present at the Liturgy - bowing before the altar of God.  Their ritualistic movements help raise the hearts and minds of the people to God.

Altar servers are very necessary for the Liturgy.
