BACKGROUND

Saint John the Baptist in Jordan is uniquely situated to facilitate a culture of high-quality Sacred Music. The church’s architecture is not only visually beautiful, but also gives it an acoustic which is both reverberant and remarkably clear–a rare combination perfect for choral singing and small instrumental ensembles. Its proximity to the Twin Cities allows professional musicians to sing or play as desired, and pros who have recently performed in or attended concerts here – featuring the finest in sacred music – often comment on how eager they are to return for more! The volunteer choral culture is beautiful, full of individuals with great musical talent and a love for Jesus that shines through their music. Kids, both in the school and from the parish community, have immersed themselves in a culture where singing the liturgy is normal. The now-completely-renovated Wicks organ fits the space and is extremely fitting for liturgical use. There is a large portion of the faithful on weekends with a great appreciation for the treasures of the Church’s sacred music repertoire.

PURPOSE

All of these factors point toward a Sacred Music program that has the potential to transmit the faith through the transcendent musical riches the Church has given us throughout the ages. This isn’t a cheap or easy task, but it is worthwhile. In order to build upon the burgeoning tradition of excellence at this parish, Saint John the Baptist is starting a fundraising effort called the “Guild of Sacred Music.” We are asking for donations (especially recurring ones) in order to help fund:

  • Liturgical musicians for Rorate Caeli Mass, First Communion, Christmas, Easter, etc.

  • Regular tuning and maintenance for the newly-restored organ and pianos throughout the building, used for rehearsal and concerts

  • Choral sheet music, especially from modern composers of sacred music

  • Missals and/or future hymnals

  • Copyright compliance

  • A robust sacred music concert series, including:

    • 8/3/25 (2pm) Summer Sacred Music Concert featuring the SJB Choir

    • 10/12/25 (2pm) Organ recital featuring Brian Carson, Sam Backman, and Cathy Rodland

    • 12/24/25 (9:30pm) Motets and Carols featuring the SJB Choir

    • 3/15 (2pm) Pergolesi Stabat Mater Concert for Laetare Sunday

    • 4/1 (7pm) Tenebrae Service

    • More offerings if funded!
