Vernon Hartman, age 85 of Jordan, MN, passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2021 surrounded by his loving family.
A Funeral Mass will be on Friday, November 19, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with a time of gathering two-hours prior, both at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 313 East Second Street, Jordan, MN. Father Neil Bakker will preside. Interment at St. John Calvary Cemetery. As a suggestion, please make a donation to St. John’s School.
Vern was born to John and Helen (Jelen) Hartman on May 27, 1936. He was born and raised on the family farm, southeast of Jordan, with older sister Patty, younger brothers Gene and Ken. They were the BEST of FRIENDS. Vern attended St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Jordan through the 8th grade. From there, he went on to work on the family farm. Vern enjoyed the farm life and taking care of the animals. His favorite part was when the little piglets were born. Vern enjoyed playing both fast and slow pitch softball, ice skating in the cattle barn at the ballpark with his buddies, ice fishing and hunting. He was involved in the Knights of Columbus for many years, and faithfully participated in the St. John’s perpetual adoration.
Vern met the love of his life, RoseMary Mechtel, at her brother Jan’s raspberry patch in 1955 and married two years later in 1957 at St. Mary’s Church of Purification in Marystown. In 1958, they started their family which grew to 6 children, Don, Anna, Corinne, Donna, Kevin, and Keith.
After working on the family farm, Vern spent most of his career at All American Glove Company, as the plant manager. Vern’s passion was woodworking and fixing something that was “un-fixable”. He donated countless items to the St. John’s fall festival. After retiring, Vern started his own business, Vern’s Woodworking and Refinishing. He always enjoyed visiting with the people who dropped off their furniture and he loved to see the joy on their face when they saw their finished piece. It always made his day, when he made someone else’s day.
Vern loved spending time with his friends and family. He always enjoyed cooking something up on the grill. Whether it was just him and Rose or when the family came home for a visit or holiday, there was always plenty to eat. Vern always made extra’s just in case one of the kids popped in, which happened quite often. He also enjoyed playing boccie ball and horseshoes in the yard with family, euchre, and watching the Minnesota Twins or Vikings games. Vern enjoyed listening to the old-time music channel and doing word search to keep his mind sharp. Vern was not one to travel, but he did manage to take a few trips with his family, including the Apple River and the Grotto in Iowa. Vern also took pleasure in taking his family out to eat, spending time at the casino, taking in an occasional movie, playing cards, and keeping his yard looking like a ballpark.
Vern was quick witted and loved to laugh. Along with his lighter side, he also had a work ethic that couldn’t be matched, and his work was always done to perfection. Vern’s love for his family was evident in everything that he did.
Forever loved, Vern will be missed by his wife, RoseMary; children, Don and Nancy (Beckius) Hartman, Anna Unger, Corinne Montgomery, Donna (Mike Johnson) Hartman Erickson, Kevin and Tammy (Whipps) Hartman, Keith and Lynda (Tuma) Hartman; grandchildren, Rachel (Joel) Myers, Meghann (Nate) Peterson, Lauren (Lucas) Beyer, David (Hannah) Hartman, Erica Unger, Stephanie Unger, Greg (Mary) Montgomery, Rick Montgomery, Ashley (Josh) Malz, Brian (Courtney) Hartman, Josh Hartman, Jeffrey Hartman; great grandchildren, Winnik and Emeric Montgomery, Luella Peterson, Aiden Malz, Levi Peterson, Lenora Hartman, Caleb Hartman, Cadance Myers, Addison Malz, Audrey Hartman; brothers, Eugene Hartman, Kenneth (Dianne) Hartman; other relatives and friends.

Glenn Joseph Nemanic, age 53, of Jacksonville, FL (formerly from Jordan and Shakopee, MN) passed away Monday, August 30, at home. Born in Portsmouth, VA at the Naval Hospital to parents: Janet L. (Beloy) and Lance M. Nemanic on April 18, 1968.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Kristin; Son Antonio both of Jacksonville, FL; Daughter, Kelsey (Paul) Foster; Grandchildren, Morgan and Alan Foster of Jordan, MN; Parents Janet L. (Beloy) and Lance M. Nemanic of Palm Coast, FL; Brother Aaron (Heather) Nemanic of Palm Coast, FL; Nephews, Ian Nemanic of Jaksonville, FL, Gavin and Noah Keck of Marville, TN; Niece Ally Keck of Palm Coast, FL; Grandmother Nancy Leaf of Golden Valley, MN; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Glenn is preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Blodwyn Beloy and by Rose and Frank Nemanic; Uncles Joseph Beloy Jr. and Charles Leaf, Cousin Geoffrey Nemanic.
Glenn graduated from Shakopee Senior High School in 1986. He continued his education at Hennepin Technical Vo-Tech South Campus Eden Prairie, MN, then continued his studies at Normandale College, Bloomington, MN.
Glenn had a waterproofing business; worked at Champion, and NAPA and Factory Motor Parts.
He loved working on cars, fishing, hunting, the beach and spending time with family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan MN on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 5:00pm with a visitation to precede starting at 4:00pm.

John “JB” Breimhorst, of Jordan, passed away August 31, 2021 at the age of 83. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandpa. He was known to all around town and was a huge supporter of local baseball. JB will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 3:00 – 7:00 PM and Wednesday, September 8, 2021 from 9:30 – 10:30 AM. Both visitation times will be held at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation (104 First Street West) in Jordan.
Mass of Christian Burial is Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Father Neil Bakker will preside, and John will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Mini Met.
Marion D Pearson, age 90, of West St Paul, formerly of Jordan, MN and Hovland, MN died peacefully surrounded by family at The Sanctuary at West St. Paul on July 24, 2021
Marion Delphine Bernazani was born March 29, 1931 in Boston, MA to Delphina (Chiesa) and Louis Bernazani.
She attended École St Joseph in Everett, MA, a grammar school taught by French speaking nuns, and graduated from Everett High School in 1948.
Marion met Eugene V. Pearson at a Christian singles dance through their church and the rest is history. They married on January 6, 1956 at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ.
In 1960 Marion and Gene with 3 young sons made their way to Minnesota and settled in Jordan where they started and operated the Pearson and Sons Greenhouse for close to 40 years.
In 1970 Marion won a blue ribbon and traveling trophy for the best flower arrangement from the North Central Florist Association contest hosted in Minneapolis and went on to compete in the Nationals in Hawaii. It was a great honor for her to be acknowledged for her work in floral design.
Marion sang alto in the choir at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Jordan, MN. She also enjoyed playing the piano throughout her life as well as dancing, and traveling with Gene.
Marion and Gene retired in 1996 and moved to Grand Marais and Hovland, MN. During her retirement she enjoyed singing in the church choir, going to coffee after daily Mass, volunteering with the Grand Marais Garden Club, and even joined a snowmobile club. Marion loved to entertain their many friends and family that visited the north shore. Spending time with her family was very important to her and she especially loved to celebrate birthdays. During the winter Marion and Gene would take a trip to Mexico or stay at their home in Mesa, AZ. She moved back to the Twin Cites area after Gene’s death in 2014. Marion was a kind and loving soul and will be greatly missed by many.
Marion will be missed by sons, Joseph (Carol), Louis (Nancy), Andrew , Mark (Jill Pennie) and Peter; grandchildren Anthony, Daniel, Eric, Brian, Timothy, Eleanor, Signe and Dylan; eight great-grandchildren; siblings George Bernazani , Helen Prizio , John Bernazani and Claire Frassica ; sisters-in-law Alice Williams and Claudia Potestio ; and many nieces and nephews.
Marion is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; sons Victor, John Paul and Claude; grandson Michael; parents; siblings Louise Rossetti , Ethel Schillinger , Paul Bernazani , Francis Chubinski and Mary (infant twin sister); sisters-in-law Barbara Cavanaugh, Constance Silkett and Roberta Pearson; and brother-in-law Robert Pearson.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, August 10 from 6-8 pm at Wagner Funeral Home, 17365 Johnson Memorial Dr., Jordan, MN 55352. A Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, August 11, 2021 at 11am with visitation 1 hour prior, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, 313 2nd St E, Jordan, MN. Father Neil Bakker will preside. Burial will be at a later date at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Grand Marais, MN. Memorials will be distributed to Catholic charities and the Alzheimer Association of MN.
Robert L (Bob) Lenz, 81 of Jordan passed away peacefully at this home on Thursday, August 5, 2021.
Bob was born to Andrew and Angela (Nytes) Lenz on January 13, 1940, in Adrian, Minnesota.
He graduated in 1957 from Ellsworth public schools in Ellsworth, Minnesota. After graduation Bob attended business school in Worthington, Minnesota. Then he moved to the Twin Cities where he met his wife of 57 years, Avis (Kimber) Lenz. Bob was then drafted to the United States Army and married Avis on September 21, 1963 in Bertha, Minnesota, while he was still enlisted in the Army. He attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and was stationed in Germany for almost 2 years. Bob was Honorably Discharged in 1964, the same year they welcomed their first of their 4 sons.
Bob and Avis resided in Jordan for the last 43 years where they raised their boys. He was a hard-working man, dedicated to his family and loved Case Tractors. Bob enjoyed his career in medical sales and worked most of his years for CF Anderson Medical Company and Physician Sales Services.
He leaves behind his wife, Avis; sons, David, Jeff (Gina), Dan (Lisa) and Tim (Jodi) Lenz; grandchildren, Devon, Haileigh, Lindsey, Joshua, Alayna, Tori and Daniel Jack; brothers, Mike (Rose) Lenz, John (Pat) Lenz, Jim (Jeri) Lenz; sister, Mary Jane (Gerald) Deleeuw.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; Andrew and Angela Lenz; brother, Nicholas Lenz and many aunts and uncles.
A Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at 11:00am at St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Jordan with a visitation 1 hour prior to Mass with Father Neil Bakker presiding. Burial immediately following Mass at Calvary Cemetery, Jordan and a luncheon after burial in the church basement. Military Honors will be provided by the Jordan Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Wagner Funeral Home of Jordan.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a painful time of separation that necessitated, for a short while, suspension of public Masses and the dispensation from the Sunday obligation to attend Mass. Nonetheless, since May 2020, Minnesota’s bishops have made available the public celebration of Mass to those who wished to attend. Parishes have done an amazing job creating safe spaces for worship and the sacraments during the past year.
Now, as the pandemic subsides, and public gathering restrictions and safety protocols are lifted, it is time to gather as the Body of Christ once again. Therefore, the bishops and diocesan administrators of the Minnesota Catholic Conference have decided to reinstate the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation beginning the weekend of July 3-4, 2021.
Why is attending Mass in-person so important?
St. John Chrysostom reminds us, “You cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, the prayers of the priests” (CCC 2179).
Attending the in-person celebration of Sunday Mass and receiving Jesus in the Eucharist are vital to our lives as Catholic Christians. We were created for Communion. Whether you are returning to your home parish, or seeking a local parish on vacation, your participation in the Mass unites you with the Church — the Body of Christ. This communion transforms us as persons and enables us to make manifest the Kingdom of God in our world. The celebration of the Eucharist truly is the source and summit of our faith.
Pope Francis, in his homily on the Feast of Corpus Christi in 2018, said, “Jesus prepares a place for us here below, because the Eucharist is the beating heart of the Church. It gives her birth and rebirth; it gathers her together and gives her strength. But the Eucharist also prepares for us a place on high, in eternity, for it is the Bread of heaven.”
Does this mean there will no longer be any dispensation from the Sunday and Holy Day obligations?
Although the general dispensation will no longer be available, the Church has always recognized that certain circumstances can excuse a person from the requirement to observe the obligation. Persons are excused from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays or Holy Days under the following circumstances:
You have reason to believe your health would be significantly compromised if you were to contract a communicable illness (i.e., you have underlying conditions or are in a high-risk category).
You exhibit flu-like symptoms.
You have good reason to think you might be asymptomatic of a contagious illness (e.g., you were in recent contact with someone who tested positive for a contagious illness such as COVID or influenza).
You care for the sick, homebound, or infirmed.
You are pregnant or you are 65 years of age or older (per the CDC’s recommendation for high-risk individuals).
You cannot attend Mass through no fault of your own (e.g., no Mass is offered; you are infirm; or, while wanting to go, you are prevented for some reason you cannot control, such as your ride did not show up).
You have significant fear or anxiety of becoming ill by being at Mass.
If situations 1 through 3 apply to you, prudent concern for your neighbor should lead you to stay home. If you fall within situations 4-7, please exercise good judgment, consider the common good, and know you would not be held to the obligation of attending Mass. For further questions about the application of any of these situations, please contact your pastor. These categories will be reviewed in due course and revised as needed.
Those within the categories enumerated above must still observe the Lord’s Day and are encouraged to spend time in prayer on Sunday, meditating on the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection; an excellent way to do this is by praying the Liturgy of the Hours and participating in a broadcast/livestream of the Sunday Mass.

Rosemary Donaldson, lifelong resident of Jordan, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2021 at the age of 87.

Rosemary will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at Calvary Cemetery in Jordan.
On August 20, 1933, Rosemary Theresa Nelson was born to parents, Reissnor and Rose (Schmitt) Nelson. Rosemary was one of ten children, and she loved growing up in Jordan. She attended St. John’s Catholic School through the 8th grade and then began working to help support her family. Rosemary enjoyed babysitting and providing daycare to local children. She loved children and babies, and she always had the special touch with them.
As a young woman, Rosemary met the love of her life, Wilbert Donaldson. Their love blossomed, and the two exchanged wedding vows at St. John’s Catholic Church in 1955. Their marriage was blessed with a wonderful daughter, Patty.
While Patty was young, both Wilbert and Rosemary worked outside the home. Rosemary spent several years at Mudbaden. She also worked in housekeeping at Valley View. Over the years, Rosemary also provided daycare for local families.
In 1973, Wilbert died suddenly. This was devastating for Rosemary, but she had a strong faith and supportive family that helped her through this difficult time. As a single mother, Rosemary worked very hard to provide a good life for her daughter.
Eventually, the family began to grow when Patty married Jim Stang, and they had three sons. Rosemary loved being a grandma. Matt, Chris & Joe brought so much joy into her life. And once the great-grandkids came, there was even more love to go around. Rosemary was always available to babysit or lend a helping hand.
Family was the most important thing in Rosemary’s life, but she had other interests too. She enjoyed walking around town, playing cards and spending time with her animals. Over the years she’s had dogs, cats, hamsters and birds. All of the family pets loved Rosemary because of her kind heart, and because she was quick to share table scraps. Rosemary was a talented artist and always kept her hands busy. She was skilled in needlework and enjoyed painting ceramics. Rosemary also loved doing puzzles and playing Bingo. She was usually very quiet and soft spoken, but she always seemed to find her voice to exclaim BINGO!
Rosemary was a kind, loving and caring woman. She never had much, but she was always so generous with what she did have. She set a wonderful example for her family and showed the endless love.
She is survived by her daughter, Patty (Jim) Stang; grandsons, Matt Stang, Chris Stang, Joe (Amanda) Stang; great-grandchildren, Amy, Nick, Shelby, Autumn Rose; siblings, Mary Ann Hagg, Robert Nelson, Sheldon Nelson and Darryl Nelson; other loving relatives, in-laws, nieces & nephews, dear friends, many wonderful neighbors from the Schule Haus, and her beloved cats, Buttercup & Snowball.

Eileen Hoy, a lifelong resident of Jordan, passed away peacefully in her home on May 22, 2021 at the age of 78. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 27, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Ballard-Sunder Funeral & Cremation (104 First Street West) in Jordan. A Funeral Mass is Friday, May 28, 2021 at 11:00 AM with visitation one-hour prior at St. John the Baptist Catholic (313 Second Street East) in Jordan. Father Neil Bakker will preside, and Eileen’s grandchildren will act as pallbearers. Eileen will be laid to rest with her husband at Calvary Cemetery in Jordan.
On February 26, 1943, Eileen Elizabeth Deusterman was born in Jordan. She was raised by her mother Johanna and had two siblings, Ronald and Mary Lou. As a girl, Eileen always ran with a fun crowd and made many lifelong friends in school. Eileen loved going out with her friends and was involved in many extracurricular activities at school.
After graduating from Jordan High School in 1961, Eileen moved to a girl’s club in Minneapolis where she lived with another young woman. It was during this time that Eileen met the love of her life through mutual friends. Jerry and Eileen hit it off immediately. Their love blossomed quickly, and the two exchanged wedding vows on August 25, 1962 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. Jerry and Eileen were blessed with four wonderful children, Jackie, Sandy, Julie and Dave. They initially lived in Minneapolis before moving back to Eileen’s hometown to raise their family.
Eileen spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was a wonderful wife and mother. Eileen always taught her kids about the importance of family and a strong faith. As a family, the Hoys enjoyed camping together. Later when the kids were grown, Jerry and Eileen loved their annual trips to Poskin Resort in Wisconsin where they enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends.
Throughout her life, Eileen was very active in the church and extremely social in the community. She acted as President and Vice President of the JCCW for many years. Eileen also served on the Liturgy Committee, was a member of the Catholic Aid Association and helped with the funeral luncheon committee at St. John’s.
The most important things in Eileen’s life were her faith and family. She absolutely loved spending time with the grandkids. She babysat them whenever needed and was always in attendance at their school events. She never missed a graduation, birthday party or wedding. It was very fitting that Eileen’s last days were spent surrounded by her family.
Eileen was a vivacious woman who always spoke her mind. She will be remembered as a faithful and loyal friend. Eileen is survived by her children, Jackie (Mark) Wolf, Sandy (Brad) Quatmann, Julie Hoy and Dave (Michelle) Hoy; grandchildren, Matt (Shawn) Wolf, Megan (Zach King) Wolf, Jon Wolf, Christopher (Kayli Shutrop) Quatmann, Abby Quatmann, Justin Hoy, Garrett (Haylee Michaud) Hoy; great-grandchildren, Everett Wolf and Calvin Quatmann; sister-in-law, Bev Deusterman; other loving relatives and many dear friends.
Eileen was proceeded in death by her husband, Jerry Hoy; mother, Johanna Deusterman; siblings, Ronald Deusterman and Mary Lou (Allen) Schmeig.
